The ebb and flow of pregnancy hormones can make it really difficult to opt for healthy foods when McDonald’s and other fast food meals sound incredibly appealing. However, it is so important to regularly include nutrient dense foods that will provide you and your growing baby the nourishment you both need to feel your best. Consuming foods containing ample vitamins and minerals will ensure you are maintaining a healthy weight, reduce pregnancy symptoms such as swelling, nausea, and fatigue, and will make you feel better overall. As often as you can, build your meals around the following foods and save the fast food and treats for special occasions (although no judgement if you NEED a Wendy’s Frosty and fry combo to get you through the day – I’ve also been there).
Here is my personal list of the 15 best foods to eat when you are pregnant. These foods are nutrient dense and can be made into sweet or savoury dishes that won’t offend your heightened pregnancy senses. Not in any particular order, they are:
- Avocado
- Quinoa
- Berries
- Greek Yogurt
- Sweet Potato
- Broccoli
- Eggs
- Chicken
- Brown Rice
- Salmon
- Beans
- Spinach
- Beef
- Oranges
- Bell Peppers
Some yummy combination ideas include:
- Quinoa bowls with sweet potato, broccoli, peppers and chicken
- Greek yogurt with berries and honey (BONUS: add in sunflower and hemp seeds)
- Salmon with brown rice and sweet potato
- Spinach salad with peppers, avocado, and quinoa
- Bean salad with chopped peppers (tossed with avocado oil, salt/pepper, and add in some chopped raw onion)
- Fruit salad with berries and chopped orange slices
- Eggs and avocado toast
- Beef and broccoli on rice
